A bill lifting the state’s moratorium on fracking and requiring regulators to promote business opportunities for energy developers easily passed a state Senate committee Wednesday. The legislation now heads to the Senate Commerce committee as early as next week.

A Republican measure to prevent major components of the federal health care law from taking effect in North Carolina will almost certainly be approved after Gov. Pat McCrory endorsed the effort Tuesday. Republicans say that expanding Medicaid to an additional 500,000 in the state would cost too much. Democrats called the bill "an attack on the poor."

A top-to-bottom makeover of the state's unemployment system took a major step forward Tuesday when the Republican-backed bill won preliminary approval in the Senate by a 36-13 margin. The measure was approved by the House last week.
