Thousands of North Carolinians went to the polls on the first day of one-stop voting Thursday, another indication of a big turnout for the May 6 primary.

Election officials previously reported surging registrations for the primary, with many people evidently drawn by the Democratic contest between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

More than 9,500 people went to the polls by mid-afternoon and many more are expected today.

Early voting runs ends May 3. At one-stop sites, people can register and vote in a single visit. Every county has at least one early voting site, and many counties plan to open more later this month.

For a list of early voting sites and their hours, go to www.sboe.state.nc.us.
