DURHAM - School board candidate Leigh Bordley, a runner-up Tuesday in the election for the board's at-large seat with 34.5 percent of the votes, will seek a runoff.

First-place finisher, candidate Jonathan R. Alston, won 36 percent of the votes, but needed more than 40 percent to win without a challenge, according to state law.

Bordley has until noon Tuesday to request the challenge in writing, said Mike Ashe, director of the Durham County Board of Elections. Bordley said Wednesday she had not yet filed the paperwork but had full intentions of doing so. The runoff will be held June 24.

The third-place finisher, former teacher Nancy Cox, earned 28.8 percent of the votes. Shortly after the loss, she offered her support to Bordley.
