ASHEVILLE -- The Republican candidate for North Carolina's 11th Congressional District is back on the trail after briefly suspending his run for office.
Carl Mumpower froze his bid for the seat held by Democratic Rep. Heath Shuler last week, citing a growing frustration with his own party.
The Asheville city councilman said he would resume his bid once at least eight county GOP parties in the 15 counties that make up the Western North Carolina district committed to what he called "core Republican Party principles." He wanted the county parties to promise to hold elected officials accountable to those values.
Mumpower said Monday that he has received word that eight counties had signed on to his plan. But he plans to press GOP officials across the state to commit to the same values.
