SENATE

North Carolina's two Republican senators took opposite stands as the Senate voted on its version of the bailout package Wednesday.

Richard Burr voted for the bill. He said: "The risks of just rolling the dice, doing nothing, and letting the chips fall where they may are, in my opinion, too high. A working credit system is core to a strong economy. The bipartisan bill before us is our best chance, and perhaps our last chance, to avert this looming crisis."

Elizabeth Dole, locked in tight re-election fight with challenger Kay Hagan, opposed the measure, calling it "a government takeover of our economy with no protection for taxpayers."

Kay Hagan has in recent days repeatedly dodged taking a position on the financial bailout package.

HOUSE

The House, which voted down a bailout Monday, is likely to vote Friday on a revised version. Here's what North Carolina representatives say about how they might vote on the revised bill and why.

DEMOCRATS WHO VOTED FOR HOUSE BILL

Mel Watt, Charlotte: Likely to continue to support. "It sounds to me like they haven't done anything but add a provision to it, related to the bailout itself, that I would be supportive of."

Bob Etheridge, Lillington: Reserving judgment until he reads the bill.

Brad Miller, Raleigh: Likely to continue to support. "Trying to get credit flowing again is important enough and urgent enough that I will vote for the bill again."

David Price, Chapel Hill: No change

DEMOCRATS WHO OPPOSED HOUSE BILL

G.K. Butterfield, Wilson: Still leaning against the bill. "We need a bill that helps the people who are hurting the most, not a bill that only helps the people who created this crisis."

Mike McIntyre, Lumberton: Did not respond.

Heath Shuler, Waynesville: Did not respond.

REPUBLICANS WHO OPPOSED HOUSE BILL

Virginia Foxx, Banner Elk: Likely to continue to oppose. "At its core, the bailout plan floated in the Senate takes the same flawed approach that was voted down in the House. "

Robin Hayes, Concord: No specific comment about Senate plan.

Walter Jones, Farmville: Likely to continue to oppose and is working on an alternative proposal.

Patrick McHenry, Cherryville: Likely to continue to oppose. "The substance of the bailout bill in the Senate is the same as the House bill I voted against."

Sue Myrick, Charlotte: Voted no, but optimistic about Senate bill. "I hope it's something we can support. After I get more information I'll make a final decision."

Howard Coble, Greensboro: Wants to study the Senate bill
