Sen. Elizabeth Dole has stopped running a a commercial that has drawn attention that ties her opponent, Democrat Kay Hagan to a Boston fund raiser hosted by an organizer of a Godless Americans PAC.

Dole spokesman Dan McLagan said the ad stopped running in most places on Friday and in some instances on Saturday. In its place, the Dole campaign is airing a second TV commercials that deal with the same Boston fund raiser, but in a less strident way.

McLagan said the decision to not run the ad through Tuesday's election was not related to criticism of the ad.

But he said the Dole campaign wanted to put up a response ad, after Hagan ran her own ad to address the criticism. The orginal ad began airing Tuesday.

Meanwhile, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was in Raleigh Saturday night where she attended a fund raiser for Hagan. The fund raiser was held at the home of former ambassador Jeannette Hyde.
