Voters granted Democrat Elaine Marshall a fourth term as secretary of state as she handily defeated Republican challenger Jack Sawyer, according to early election returns.
With 11 of 100 counties reporting, Marshall had 57.6 percent and Sawyer had 42.4 percent.
Marshall, 62, ran a campaign based on her long experience as the secretary of state, whose office is responsible for maintaining a host of records that range from the current list of lobbyists to business incorporations and commercial loan documents.
The race was the first run for office for Sawyer, a Mebane real estate attorney. Sawyer tried to convince voters that Marshall was responsible for social security numbers being posted on the office’s Web site. Marshall said that Sawyer had overblown the incident.
