HILLSBOROUGH -- For the first time, the Orange County Board of Commissioners has seven members, and the majority are women.
Valerie Foushee was elected chairwoman Monday night, on the night the board expanded from five members. "Thanks to my colleagues for the confidence you have expressed in me, and I will do my best," Foushee said.
As Foushee rose to the top spot after four years on the board, Commissioner Moses Carey retired after 24 years of service. Foushee is the first female African-American to lead the board.
New members Bernadette Pelissier and Pam Hemminger joined Foushee and Alice Gordon to make up the female majority. Newcomer Steve Yuhasz joined outgoing Chairman Barry Jacobs and incoming Vice Chairman Mike Nelson to round out the board. All of the commission members are Democrats.
