State Rep. David Almond Jr., a Stanly County Republican, resigned from the legislature today after allegations against him surfaced this week.
In a written statement distributed by the House GOP caucus, Almond said a complaint had been filed against him with House Speaker Joe Hackney.
"I intend to defend myself against these charges in whatever forum may be appropriate," he wrote.
Almond, an insurance agent in his second term, delivered his resignation letter to House Minority Leader Paul "Skip" Stam of Apex, and Stam said he gave it to Hackney.
No one has publicly described the allegations against Almond. Hackney said in a statement that the person who filed the complaint had asked that specific information remain confidential.
"If the allegations against Rep. Almond prove to be true, then his resignation is appropriate," Hackney said.
Stam said that caucus leaders had asked Almond to resign if the allegations were true.
"We don't know the truth," he added.
Stanly County lies northeast of Charlotte.
