ASHEVILLE - Former U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor said Saturday that he will not try in 2008 to reclaim the congressional seat he held for 16 years, but he left open the possibility that he could some day seek political office again.

Taylor, the veteran Republican who has remained coy about his political plans since leaving Congress a year ago, told a pair of reporters after his annual Christmas gathering that he is focused on helping other Republican candidates and running his bank business.

About 1,000 people attended Taylor's annual Christmas dinner Saturday night.
