Readers' questions for Clinton

During the 2008 campaign, we'll ask you what questions you have for the candidates and get answers. Staff writer Rob Christensen posed these questions from readers to Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday in Raleigh.

"Will you sign the Kyoto Protocol?"

- Henry Moree, 12, Holly Springs, a seventh-grader at Centennial Middle School, Democrat

CLINTON: "Actually, I hope to do better than the Kyoto Protocol. I hope to include developing, fast-growing economies like China and India. There is an ongoing process that started in Bali [Indonesia] to try to come up with the next version of a global warming pact for the world. I believe strongly that the United States president should be leading that. I have said in my comprehensive energy plan that is on my Web site that I would immediately ask there be meetings that I would attend at least every quarter so we could hammer out what the next protocol would be by the end of the first year in office. Because I think that is important."

"Please ask Hillary Clinton why she continues to fight so hard for the Democratic nomination when she cannot win by delegate count. Why does she not think of the party and winning in November instead of herself?"

William Huggins Sr., 76, retired banker, Clayton, Democrat

CLINTON: "Well, I think there are a lot of misconceptions of where we are in this campaign. This is a very close campaign. Neither one of us can win by the delegate count. And so therefore we are going to have 10 more contests including North Carolina. We have to decide how we avoid disenfranchising Michigan and Florida. I'm going to work hard to win enough support among all the delegates to be the nominee."

"I would like the two presidential candidates to respond to the following question: Why aren't you proposing and supporting two important issues as 'term limits' and 'line-item veto?' "

Henry Zurawel, 78, retired engineer, Raleigh, Independent

CLINTON: "I don't believe in term limits, so I wouldn't support it. I think democracy is the best antidote. People can decide who they wish to vote for in free and fair elections. I don't support term limits, except for president. I do support the Constitution.

"You know, my husband supported a line-item veto. It was challenged in the courts, and the courts said it was unconstitutional. I have looked at other formulations of the line-item vetoes and have yet to see one that I think would withstand the court's scrutiny."
