RALEIGH - A Wake County jury spent three hours Thursday trying to decide whether Charles Dickerson planned to kill his ex-girlfriend Brenda Fox or whether he snapped and killed her without any forethought.

The jury will return today to finish its deliberations and decide whether he's guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter.

His punishments could range from a death sentence, if he's convicted of first-degree murder, to a minimum 10-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter.

Fox, 42, was beaten to death in February 2006 on the day before she was going to get married when she stopped by Dickerson's house to fill out custody papers for Dickerson's high-school aged son, who had been living at Fox's home.
