Events will prepare you for disaster

The Orange County Health Department and Orange County Emergency Services are sponsoring an emergency preparedness campaign as part of National Preparedness Month. The two agencies will hold disaster preparedness workshops Sept. 13 in Mebane and Sept. 16 in Chapel Hill.

The agencies will also host an emergency preparedness fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 outside the Hillsborough Wal-Mart. Participants can win disaster supply items such as a backpack and first-aid kit. For more information, call campaign coordinator Candice Watkins Robinson at 245-2462 or visit www.readyorange.org.

An emergency preparedness fair also will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23 through 25 in the lobby of the N.C. Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill. The theme of the fair will be "Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Get Involved," with a special emphasis on bridging gaps in preparedness.

The event will provide information and tools on family, elder, and special needs preparedness as well as information on coping with stress. A weather radio and a Red Cross disaster kit will be given away as door prizes.

Craft show, bake-off coming to Youngsville

The Youngsville Fall Festival will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the National Guard Armory, 125 U.S. 1-A in Youngsville.

The festival will include a craft show and a bake-off to determine the best cook in Youngsville. Children's activities include face painting, games and food. An open-class car show will be across the street in the Youngsville Elementary School parking lot.

High schools comjpete at annual Band Bash

The Southeast Raleigh High School Marching Bulldog Band will hold its annual Band Bash competition Saturday, Sept. 27.

The competition will feature bands from across North and South Carolina. The first band will take the field around 2 p.m at the high school, 2600 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh.
