Barbecue will benefit orphanages

The annual Masonic Carolina Pig-Jig Barbecue Cookoff is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Tickets are $10 each, and children ages 12 and under are admitted free.

The event features Masonic barbecue teams from around the state competing to win trophies, ribbons and bragging rights by capturing the title of N.C. State Masonic Barbecue Grand Champion. Proceeds will benefit two orphanages, The Masonic Home for Children and The Central Children's Home, both in Oxford.

Ride your hog to help victims of violence

A motorcycle ride to benefit women and children in crisis will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Wilson Community College, 902 Herring Ave., Wilson. The entry fee is $10. Proceeds will support victims of domestic violence.

Tennis event offers lessons, contests

Tennispalooza 2008, a charity event for Junior Achievement of Eastern North Carolina, is noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, on the Lake Lynn tennis courts, 7921 Ray Road, Raleigh.

Junior Achievement is a nonprofit group dedicated to educating and inspiring students to succeed in the global economy. The tennis event is for families and players at all skill levels and includes group tennis lessons, tennis contests with prizes and exhibition matches.
