RALEIGH - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh will honor retired Bishop F. Joseph Gossman on the 40th anniversary of his ordination as a bishop with a special Mass today.

The 3 p.m. Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary in the company of nearly a dozen bishops. Among them will be Wilton D. Gregory, archbishop of Atlanta; Cardinal William Keeler, retired archbishop of Baltimore; Peter J. Jugis, bishop of Charlotte; and William G. Curlin, bishop emeritus of Charlotte.

Raleigh Bishop Michael F. Burbidge will be the principal celebrant. Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah, Ga., will deliver the homily.

Gossman, 78, was ordained a priest Dec. 17, 1955. Pope Paul VI named him to the position of auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1968 at the age of 38. Gossman was installed as the fourth bishop of Raleigh on May 19, 1975. He served until his retirement in June 2006.
