Rethinking $1 million

Do we agree that we're experiencing a time in which we need to spend our money in the best way? The May 17 article "Easley backs tribute to black experience" explained that Gov. Mike Easley wants to spend $1 million on a Freedom Monument. On May 29, an article said the Shepherd's Table doesn't have enough money in its budget to feed people who need food.

Is a Freedom Monument the best way to spend $1 million at a time when our economy is suffering? Don't misunderstand me. I don't care whether the monument is for Asians, Africans, Italians, the French or whoever -- $1 million could feed many people! It could help people buy gas, pay electric bills or feed those who are hungry!

A freedom monument can be built at any time. Is now the best time?
