Serving the autistic

Thank you for printing the July 9 article "Parents push fringe remedy for autism" about chelation and autism. Many alternative therapies, possibly such as this one, seem to prey upon the desperation of parents of autistic children. And with high-profile stars like Jenny McCarthy offering up half-baked explanations and cures for a complex neurological condition, I find any unbiased coverage of these therapies quite welcome.

I am also the mother of an autistic child, and I do not feel comfortable subjecting my child to these expensive and sometimes risky therapies of which he would bear the brunt physically. I worry that so many parents of autistic children are being financially and emotionally fleeced based on fear and an understandable desire to help their children.

Please continue to shine a light on this subject. My son, now mainstreamed in the third grade, continues to make steady improvements without diet changes, chelation or hyperbaric chambers. Routines, consistency and occupational therapy serve him well as does a big dose of love and acceptance.
