What it says about us

The July 23 article "Mom arrested; kids left on I-85" begs one question: Are we a civilized society or not? It doesn't matter what one's stance on immigration may be -- this is an issue of treating others humanely.

We have a clear example here of children caught up in their parents' problems through no fault of their own. How dare that officer not take steps to make sure those children were well taken care of! What kind of police department sees no problem with leaving a 6-year-old on the side of a major highway in the middle of the night? Even more to the point, what kind of society are we if we allow it?
