Ready for the road

Regarding the Aug. 21 article "Driver's ed could get a revamp": It was not too long ago (three years, actually) that I was among the throng of teens spending 30 hours of summer in a driver's ed class. It might not have been my favorite way to spend the summer, but it was definitely a necessary part of my driving experience.

From the class, I learned to identify road signs, got tips for dealing with sticky highway situations and learned necessary rules and laws for keeping myself and others safe on the highway. Without knowing these rules, smooth maneuvering would be of little benefit.

I understand the need for more hands-on experience. I have had to work diligently over the last few years to hone my driving skills. However, students need not be shortchanged on book knowledge in exchange for video game simulation or even actual driving time. Students still need adequate classroom instruction. However, an increase in driving experience (on the road, not in a cyberworld) would not be a bad idea.
