Outdated labor laws

A Sept. 30 ad in The News & Observer that attacked the Employee Free Choice Act and warned of union intimidation was laughable. Supervisors wield the paycheck and the pink slip. Union organizers carry membership cards and informational leaflets. Who do you think holds the power and is most likely to bully workers?

All we have to do is look at the Wall Street crisis and the proposed bailout to see how our economic system serves the interests of Big Business while ignoring the needs of working families. The current union election system is no different: It's heavily tilted toward CEOs and against workers.

It's time to reform not just Wall Street, but also our outdated labor laws so that workers get a fair shot at bargaining for a better life. The Employee Free Choice Act levels the playing field and gives workers that opportunity. Candidates who support this legislation should be commended for standing up to the false claims of Big Business front groups who care far more about their bottom lines than their employees.
