Unfair to Perdue

Your Oct. 8 article "Dole, Perdue content to avoid debates" was misleading and unfair to Bev Perdue. She has committed to five televised debates in this campaign, with the next one is schedule for next week in Charlotte. That's hardly someone content to avoid debates, as the misleading headline proclaimed.

Five televised debates is more than any presidential campaign, and more than any gubernatorial campaign in North Carolina history. There were only four televised gubernatorial debates during the 1996, 2000 and 2004 general elections combined.

You were well aware that Perdue will participate in five televised debates, but readers didn't learn that until almost the very end of the article, after the story was continued onto page 8A. The front-page headline and coverage paints a very different and inaccurate picture.

Bev Perdue is proud to be participating in a record amount of debates and looks forward to the next one on Oct. 15.
