Although I am no great fan of the Bush administration, I must argue that Peter Coclanis was wrong in his May 9 Point of View in his criticism of the administration's response to Cyclone Nargis. If anybody deserves a rebuke for the handling of this disaster, it is the military leaders of Myanmar.
While the thugs in Yangon (Rangoon) are busy doing photo ops, thousands are dying because they won't give landing rights to relief aircraft. The United States and other countries have airplanes, ships and troops ready to deliver aid but are not allowed to. Even the head of the U.N. World Food Program was quoted on CNN saying he is "furious" over the refusal of Myanmar's government to allow for food distribution to proceed.
Coclanis needs to put his bias against the Bush administration away and concentrate on ways that help can be given to the dying masses of Myanmar.
