SMITHFIELD - Smithfield-Selma football coach Anthony Barbour tried a fresher approach to Thursday's game against Chapel Hill, and the result was a 22-12 nonconference victory over the Tigers.

"We've got a lot of guys playing both ways," Barbour said. "We used more players on defense this week and had our other guys sit out some on defense.

"That kept them fresher on offense. It paid off."

One player who benefited was running back/defensive back D.J. Bunn, who turned in two big plays for Spartans touchdowns after he put his team ahead 9-3 on a 6-yard touchdown run.

In the second quarter, Deantonio Duplin intercepted a Chapel Hill pass and on the next play, Bunn raced 76 yards for a touchdown and a 15-3 lead.

After Chapel Hill's Justin Kircher kicked his second field goal to cut the deficit to 15-6, Bunn caught a Anthony Rouse pass in a crowd and pulled away for a 34-yard touchdown play.

After Henry Johnson's kick, the Spartans led 22-6 early in the fourth quarter.

"I've really wanted to make some big plays, because I felt like I let my team down last week," said Bunn, a University of North Carolina recruit. "I was cramping up and couldn't play as much."

SSS scored first on Johnson's 32-yard field goal before Kircher tied the score with his first 24-yarder.

Chapel Hill's final touchdown came on an 82-yard drive capped by Steven Moore's 2-yard run. The two-point conversion pass attempt failed, and Smithfield recovered the onside kick with 1:06 left.

Bunn finished with 112 yards on eight carries. He caught two passes for 48 yards.

"Bunn played well, but really the entire backfield played well," Barbour said.

Barbour also praised the running of Josh Snead, who had 41 yards.

Tigers sophomore quarterback John House completed 20 of 36 passes for 226 yards.

Chapel Hill's defense was led by Jared McAdoo, a 280-pound senior defensive tackle who showed good speed and power.

The game featured three UNC commitments -- Bunn, McAdoo and SSS linebacker Justin Dixon.
