The Carolina Jazz Festival continues this weekend at UNC-Chapel Hill: The UNC Jazz Band directed by Jim Ketch performs tonight at Memorial Hall with guest artists Greg Gisbert (trumpet), Victor Goines (tenor saxophone and clarinet) and Herlin Riley (drums). On Saturday, an afternoon workshop for combos and a concert by UNC combos and the guest artists -- both events are in Hill Hall and are free -- will be followed at night by the San Francisco Jazz Collective in Memorial Hall. The Collective is an all-star octet now led by tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. Tickets: www.carolinaperformingarts.org and 843-3333.

Tonight in Durham at Page Auditorium, alto saxophonist Maceo Parker, the Kinston native who gained fame in James Brown's band (see page 14), and Booker T. Jones of Booker T and the MG's fame wrap up Duke University's "Soul Power" series. Tickets: tickets.duke.edu and 684-4444.
