Raleigh, Durham welcome festivals

All the town's a fair this weekend, with food, music art and shopping in the open air.

Artsplosure

Artsplosure takes over downtown Raleigh on Saturday and Sunday, with an Art Market of more than 170 visual artists and crafters, setting up booths in and around Moore Square. Plus there's the sounds of live music from jazz to blues to indie rock on two stages. Among the featured performers: the Jon Faddis Quartet, Otis Taylor, Janiva Magness, Anat Cohen, The Old Ceremony, Nathan Asher & the Infantry and Eric Lindell. Play chess with Lyle Estill's life-sized chess pieces or enjoy Polyphemus Plexipuss, the 20-foot caterpillar puppet designed by Paperhand Puppet Intervention (Read more about Kidsplosure on Page 27). 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. www.artsplosure.org

The second annual Insplosure accompanies the main event, with local arts and crafts inside the Pour House at 224 S. Blount St. There will also be photography, painting, jewelry, textiles, stained glass and home goods. And naturally, you can imbibe a bit. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. www.the-pour-house.com

RebusFest

For a smaller-scale, alternative arts celebration -- also in Raleigh -- the family-friendly RebusFest on Sunday, from noon to 7 p.m. brings music from the Loners, Kickin'Grass, Starmount, Monologue Bombs, the T's, and Edmund II. Artists Julie Armbruster, Casey Porn, Betty McKim, Staci Sawyer, Clifton May and Lauren Turner, among others, will be selling their goods, which will include clothing, textiles, jewelry, photographs and paintings. The menu, catered by Posh Nosh, will feature South-of-the-border treats such as fish tacos, roasted corn with cilantro butter, gazpacho as well as good old pulled pork sandwiches. 301-2 Kinsey St., 754-8452 www.rebusworks.us

Bimbé Festival

Or you can attend the 39th annual Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival, Saturday and Sunday at the Durham Athletic Park in downtown Durham, at 550 Corporation St. A family-friendly event based on African harvest celebrations, Bimbé features live music -- including hip hop artist Pierce Freelon, reggae from JamRock, the Bull City Syndicate and neo soul artist Veeda; crafts, children's activities and food. 561-4355 or durhamnc.gov/departments/ parks
