Black History Month

The N.C. Museum of History is your destination to explore African-American history at your own pace. The museum in downtown Raleigh has set up a reading room with special selections to browse Saturdays and Sundays through the month, and special themed tours will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturdays this month. Two highlights this weekend: A performance of Rudy Wallace's new play "Hard Time Days and the Spirit to Prevail," based on North Carolina slave narratives, at 3 p.m. Saturday; and a musical tribute to the African-American blues tradition by Scott Ainslie at 3 p.m. Sunday. General hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Details: 733-8655, www.ncmuseumofhistory.org.

Farm life lessons

Did you know this is a time of year when goats give birth? Did you know the goat babies, or kids, look like little stuffed animals? This is why Celebrity Dairy, near Pittsboro, will throw open the barn doors Sunday, so families and the just curious can see the goats and learn more about this aspect of farm life. Story and more details, page 34.

'Treat Parade'

What if everyday objects -- pillows, stationery, jewelry -- were re-imagined by some of the area's most creative artists and craftsmen? Bickett Gallery in Raleigh (209 Bickett Blvd.) will find out this weekend, when it plays host to "Treat Parade," a showcase featuring 20 top talents from the Triangle and beyond. They'll serve it all up in a marketplace atmosphere featuring music, hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar, along with a graffiti-inspired installation by gallery owner Molly Miller. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. today and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, and admission is free. Details: 836.5358, www.bickettgallery.com.
