Oil ebb and flow

It was nice to read the Sept. 29 Point of View article "Oil and offshore realities," a well-reasoned analysis of the extent of our addiction to oil and the lack of relief more drilling is likely to provide. Our largest single oil supplier is now Canada, and for the past several years we have been importing oil extracted from the Alberta oil sands. These deposits are far larger than the estimated offshore amounts from both the Atlantic and Pacific coastal areas put together.

One would assume that the addition of such a large, new supply of crude oil to the world market would have led to lower costs. It didn't because global demand is rising faster than supply. Prices are falling now because global demand is down with the weak economy. We hope the economy will get better, but when it does, oil demand and prices will rise again.

We can drill all we want, but we won't ever be able to drill our way to low-cost oil. Big Oil will be happy to sell us as much oil as we want at whatever price it can extract from us. We need to invest in alternative technologies so we don't have to buy their oil any more.
