Thanks to Joe Miller, Ted Richardson and Wade Rawlins of The N&O for the summer series about North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The spotlight you've focused on the trail has energized our volunteers and brought us many new supporters and friends to push for the completion of the trail.

One concrete measure of the effect of the articles is that we had 100 volunteers sign up to build trail at Falls Lake on a recent Saturday. With all those hands to help, we easily passed our goal and now have 40 miles of trail completed there, making that section one of the longest trails in the state.

We have 500 more miles of trail to build, however, before the trail is complete from the Great Smokys to the Outer Banks. We hope N&O readers will continue to get involved to make this dream come true.

Gov. Mike Easley has just proclaimed October as Mountains-to-Sea Trail month in North Carolina. For details about outdoor excursions statewide, see www.ncmst.org.
