Well-used survey

Regarding the Aug. 24 article "Teachers' happiness varies widely, state survey finds": Superintendent Del Burns and his staff are to be commended for taking the surveys seriously and using the results to improve the Wake County schools. Apparently they realize that teachers in any school can quickly and accurately pinpoint and elaborate on strengths and weaknesses in a school. This input, when used, will promote good teacher morale and ensure an environment most conducive to effective teaching and learning.

School administrators do not make themselves successful, teachers do. It is my opinion based on 38 years of experience in public education that highly effective schools have administrators who are good leaders and facilitators. They allow their staffs to partner with them in charting the course for student success.

If you observe schools very closely, you will find the best ones to be those developed by teachers greatly empowered by an effective leader.

Thanks again to Burns for using the information from the survey.
