Beltline, unbuckled

"It's a circle!" has often been the retort flung at anyone expressing frustration with trying to navigate Raleigh's Beltline.

But given the many signs pointing toward Sanford or Benson or Wake Forest or Durham, drivers who just want to find North Hills or South Hills can be forgiven for being more than a little confused.

In 1996, traffic engineers started adding "Inner Beltline" and "Outer Beltline" signs to help the direction-impaired among us. That sounds fine until you realize how many drivers are approaching Beltline entrance ramps with clocks, and not the road, on their minds. Clockwise? Counterclockwise? Around the top of the Beltline? The bottom?

Other than the million-dollar price tag, the plan to change the signs -- which takes into account that the Beltline was never a perfect circle any way, so there! -- seems to make sense. The part of the Beltline that overlaps with Interstate 40 becomes plain ol' I-40, and the rest of the Beltline becomes 440 East and 440 West.

For those who still have trouble with left and right, though, there's always GPS.
