A tribute deserved

Nothing short of my personal illness kept me from the dedication of our county's public center to Sheriff John Baker.

Few had the distinct honor I did for 40 years with him as "boss," mentor, true friend, confidante. And I know that "tough guy" I so loved was looking down from above -- with a grin on his face and a tear in his eye.

Sheriff Baker received so many honors and recognitions during his life dating back to his high school days, and now posthumously one that would have meant so much. Yet regardless of any honor, he humbly (though many times not so humbly) continued to seek ways to help people and to improve or change things.

I was also blessed to be so close to his dear family. I would be remiss not to thank his beloved wife, Juanita, for being such an inspirational, dedicated, gracious and selfless "first lady of law enforcement" and sharing him with us for so many years.

Thanks to all who had a part in this most deserved dedication, and my personal thanks to God for the years I was blessed to have had him in my life and now forever in my heart.
