Bus gas savings

Wake County has a Geographical Information Services Department and very sophisticated GIS software. If Wake County students were assigned to neighborhood schools, the GIS gurus could determine the optimum (minimum mileage) bus routes.

This would save fuel, tires, maintenance and wages. It would also remove many buses from I-40/540 where they impede traffic, and also improve air quality. Can the county commissioners direct the GIS Department to perform this study? The money saved could then be targeted toward improving substandard schools instead of sent to foreign oil suppliers.
