Iowa's fifth-ranked field hockey team handed top-ranked North Carolina its first loss since the 2006 season on Sunday, winning 3-2 in ACC-Big Ten Challenge play at Winston-Salem.
The Tar Heels (1-1) led 2-0 before Iowa (1-1) scored three times in the final 20:28, including twice in the final 3:04.
"We congratulate Iowa," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They had seven seniors who refused to quit. They really wanted to win. After we got a two-goal lead, we sat back a little bit and didn't play with the same poise and composure. Bottom line, Iowa deserved to win."
The Tar Heels had won 25 consecutive matches.
Junior Danielle Forword, who scored four times in UNC's 6-0 victory against No. 9 Michigan Saturday, opened the scoring against the Hawkeyes with an unassisted goal at the 9:15 mark.
Kiki Norbruis collected the rebound after a penalty corner shot and fed the ball to junior Illse Davids, who put UNC up 2-0 in the second half.
Iowa cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Caitlin McCurdy in the 47th minute on an assist from Carolina Blaum and tied it on Katie Naughton's unassisted score at 66:56.
McCurdy got the winner for the Hawkeyes less than two minutes later when she scored on a breakaway, again assisted by Blaum.
ALSO SUNDAYMORE FIELD HOCKEYDUKE 2, DELAWARE 0: Amie Survilla scored two goals to lead No. 12 Duke (1-1) past Delaware (0-2) in the consolation game of the Champions Challenge tournament at Louisville, Ky.
The Blue Devils lost 1-0 to No. 17 Louisville on Saturday in the opening round.
MEN'S SOCCERWAKE FOREST 3, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 0: Senior forward Marcus Tracy scored his second game-winning goal in as many matches, and top-ranked Wake Forest (2-0) recorded its first shutout of the season as the Deacons blanked Florida International (0-2).
Evan Brown and Lyle Adams also scored for the Deacons.
Junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald made three saves to notch his first shutout of the season for the Deacs.
The Deacons got on the board in the 57th minute. Brown played a cross into the 6-yard box and found Tracy, who headed the ball into the lower left part of the net.
After a 73-minute weather delay, Brown made it 2-0 in the 60th minute.
NORTH CAROLINA 1, VCU 0 (OT): Senior captain Michael Callahan scored with 4:31 remaining in the first overtime to give No. 24 North Carolina (2-0) a win over VCU (0-2) on the final day of the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.
Senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe made a career-best five saves to pick up his second shutout.
NOTRE DAME 4, DUKE 1: Third-ranked Notre Dame (1-1) scored a pair of goals in each half to defeeat Duke (0-2) on the final day of the adidas/IU Classic at Bloomington, Ind.
Duke got its goal in the 76th minute on a penalty kick. Mike Grella took the kick, but it was initially blocked by Notre Dame's Andrew Quinn. Grella knocked home the rebound to make it a 4-1 game.
WOMEN'S SOCCERNORTH CAROLINA 1, TENNESSEE 0: Second-ranked North Carolina got a goal from junior forward Nikki Washington 27 minutes into the match and made it hold up to shut out No. 14 Tennessee (1-2) at College Station, Texas.
The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the season with the win after beating back-to-back ranked opponents in the Texas A&M Weekend Soccer Invitational.
Washington scored from 12 yards out into the right corner.
WAKE FOREST 5, UNC-WILMINGTON 0: Sarah Winslow scored three goals to lead the No. 15 Wake Forest (3-0) past visiting UNC-Wilmington (1-2-1).
"We didn't have a great start today," Deacons coach Tony da Luz said. "In the first 10 minutes, we could have easily been down 2-0. We came back and scored some very good goals. I'm happy with how we played overall."
Outside of the first 10 minutes of the game, Wake Forest controlled much of the action. The Deacons outshot UNC-Wilmington 21-15 and had an 11-7 advantage in shots on goal.
DUKE 1, UNC-GREENSBORO 0: After scoring 13 goals in its first two contests, 10th-ranked Duke (3-0) scored in the 76th minute to win a defensive battle over the Spartans (2-2) at Durham.
In the 76th minute, a UNCG foul gave Duke a direct kick from 25 yards out.
Junior Jane Alukonis took the attempt, and with the help of sophomore Rebecca Allen shielding the Spartans defense, the ball slipped through the box and found the back left corner of the goal.
The Blue Devils were able to hold off the Spartans over the final 13 minutes to register their third straight shutout.
