CHAPEL HILL - A new cost-cutting method of leasing books will allow Orange County to restore hours at its Carrboro branch and other libraries, county officials said Friday.

The announcement came a month after officials announced cuts in temporary staff funding would force the libraries to reduce their hours. The town-run Chapel Hill Public Library was not affected.

Brenda Stephens, the director of regional library system that runs the county libraries, said officials found several new ways to save money, including delaying the purchase of bulk supplies such as library cards and renting some books at a fraction of the purchase price.
