A Marine based in North Carolina was killed in Afghanistan.

First Lt. Jason D. Mann, 29, of Woodlynne, N.J., died during a nonhostile incident in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.

Mann joined the Marine Corps in 1997. He trained as an Arab linguist and a reconnaissance Marine. In 2005, he began training as an officer. He joined his unit in 2006.

His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
