Construction crews this week completed installation of one of two major pieces of art for the first phase of Raleigh-Durham International Airport's Terminal 2 project, which is scheduled to open this fall. "Wingspun" is a glass installation that extends 780 feet along the international arrivals corridor. According to the RDU Authority, the artwork combines large components easily spotted by those walking at a quick pace, with more detailed images that repeat travelers will discover. The larger components include depiction of a bird's wing in flight and an insect wing in flight, linked with DNA helix.Airport officials launched a public art program in 2000 with the theme "mind-made, hand-made." The theme is used to reflect the Triangle's strengths in high technology, medicine and education and to showcase the region's rich arts and crafts heritage."Wingspun" was designed by artist Ellen Driscoll. When phase two is completed in the winter of 2011, Terminal 2 will feature two additional works.
