Hunters accustomed to heading to their favorite dove fields on the Saturday before Labor Day better beware.

North Carolina's dove season, the traditional start of hunting season, doesn't begin until noon on the Monday holiday because of federal migratory bird laws that prohibit the season starting in August.

Hunters who ignore the later start could get fined and lose their hunting privileges for two years, said Col. Kenneth Everhart, enforcement chief for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Labor Day starts the first of three segments to the state's dove season: Sept. 1-Oct. 6, Nov. 19-24 and Dec. 17-Jan. 12. Shooting hours for doves are noon to sunset Sept. 1, then one half-hour before sunrise until sunset thereafter.
