The lay of the land

I read with interest the Aug. 5 article "Wake commissioners reject rocky land for high school" on the estimated $2 million extra it would take to level the high school building site off Forestville Road.

I do not understand how this would come as a surprise to county planning officials. For several years, there has been an updated soil map of the county that shows, among many soil properties, the depth to hard bedrock that would create problems in excavation.

Using GIS software, I generated a map showing the problem areas in Wake County. Why was site condition not considered before selecting the location?

Our agency would be glad to show the county planners how to use their soils data to help avoid expensive mistakes. While our soil surveys are not site specific, they can point out potential problems that might be encountered.

All of this data is available free!
