Change volunteer mileage, too

I am a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in North Raleigh. While I find it very rewarding to help people who otherwise can't get out and get a meal, I'm frustrated that it's getting harder and harder for me to keep my routes with the higher gas prices.

I know that the program is in need of drivers, and I'm sure there has been a drop in volunteers since the gas prices have risen.

I just saw that the IRS has raised the tax credit in gas mileage for businesses to 58.5 cents a mile, while the charitable gas credit is staying at 14 cents a mile.

It is an outrage that the government is always urging us to volunteer to help people, yet it doesn't give us much incentive to do it.

I will continue to volunteer because there's nothing like seeing the smiles on people's faces when you arrive at their doors, but I just hope it isn't affecting too many other volunteers out there.

Let's get the IRS to acknowledge the volunteers out there and keep them from giving up.
