Palin's positions

In regard to Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter and her own refusal to abort her baby born with Down syndrome, it's difficult to determine whether the "analyses" of Barry Saunders and Ellen Goodman on Sept. 4 were deliberate dishonesty or incompetence. Rather than quote them with my limited space, I will make the following two points:

1) Resistance to abortion isn't based on a desire to control someone. It's based on the rational analysis that once an egg and sperm unite, life has started for a human being. Ending it is the murder of this human before he develops the ability to communicate, and we're morally obligated to defend him.

2) This is perhaps more nebulous, but conservative or religious resistance to sex education isn't so much about an unwillingness to prevent pregnancy as it is about combating the view of some that sex is just another natural urge to be satisfied at whim. The act of giving or advocating condoms by a school is a nonverbal, fundamental assertion of that view.

Disagreement is possible, but miscasting positions and obscuring the issues make public debate impossible.
