Amid the bleak news of the day - dismal economy, high gas prices, unending war and conflict -- it was encouraging to read April 27 about three local college students. The three, Grace Wang of Duke and Natasha McKinnon and Jason Lindsay of N.C. State, exemplify rising civic awareness and volunteerism in this generation. We have also seen increased participation in the electoral process by our youngest voters.
Wang is to be congratulated for her willingness to risk her personal safety to seek conciliation between peoples of different races, cultures and religions. McKinnon's fight to overcome injuries suffered in service to our country and to gain an education is admirable. I am impressed that Lindsay, after serving in Iraq, is willing to further delay his education to participate in the civic affairs of our country.
Perhaps there is yet hope for our country and world.
