Statistics from the past week that deserve a doubletake.
45,665: The number of North Carolina voters who switched party registration this year; 42 percent became Democrats, 42.2 percent became unaffiliated and 15 percent became Republicans.
95,000: The number of Americans who are 100 years old or older.
$9,657: The average insurance premium required to cover a North Carolina family in 2005, a 24.9 percent increase over 2001.
51: The percentage increase in holdups in Raleigh this year over the same period (January through April) last year.
50: The number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq in April, the highest number since 65 deaths in September.
22,000: The number of people killed by terrorists around the world in 2007.
77: The percentage of new American moms who breastfeed their babies, at least briefly. In 1993-94, the percentage was 60.
7.8: The percentage increase in North Carolina's Hispanic population last year.
85: The percentage of public school students in New Orleans who are a year and a half to two years below grade level. The typical figure would be about 15 percent.
$19,260: The average amount of debt that a North Carolina college student carried in 2006.
20: The number of people an Associated Press video game reviewer ran over while playing the new Grand Theft Auto IV game. He also killed 15 other people (some of whom had it coming) and beat up an old lady.
