Deserving of kindness

Some people, including teachers, don't know what to do when they hear slurs against gay people being thrown about. Perhaps they are afraid of being harassed or of being seen as gay themselves if they support a gay person. This is the way homophobia works, with oppression or fear of oppression, by association. (It's the same way racism works!) Do most teachers know what to do when racial slurs are hurled? Yes! We have at least come far enough in our country that teachers know they are supported to step in and put a stop to racial name calling.

As I gay person, I have experienced bullying directly. I would have loved to have seen categories remain in the anti-bullying bill to give teachers support to do the right thing when it comes to treating gay children as fully equal human beings.

No matter your moral view on gayness, I believe we can come together on this point: All children deserve kindness and respect.
