Leesville Road, led by starting pitcher Taylor Gentry, beat Durham Riverside 4-2 in the district baseball playoffs Friday.
Gentry went 5 1/3 innings, getting five strikeouts. He was relieved by Brennan Dorsett in the sixth inning, who fanned another five batters and earned the save.
"We got some timely hitting," Leesville Road coach Chad Smothers said."
Pride seniors Ethan Brown hit a solo home run, and Sean Steinbugler had a home run and a double.
Leesville Road will host Greenville Rose on Tuesday.
RAINED OUT: Two 4-A baseball playoff games were rained out Friday, Sanderson's game with Durham Jordan and Apex's game with Wilmington Hoggard.
Host Sanderson rescheduled the game for tonight at 7. Apex moved its game back to 6 p.m.
TIGERS POUNCE: Junior Alex Ryan led Fuquay-Varina over Hope Mills South View 4-0 in the 4-A softball district playoffs.
Ryan got the win, pitching five shutout innings before senior Jordan Smith came in for the save.
Fuquay-Varina got its scoring carousel going in the first inning, when Jessie Boni doubled in a run and then was doubled in by Smith.
PIRATES GET BY: Durham Riverside scored the only run in the sixth, beating Southeast Raleigh 1-0 in the 4-A softball district playoffs.
Riverside senior Jenn Ladd, a UNC-Wilmington recruit, threw 10 strikeouts and gave up only three hits.
APEX DOUBLES MOVES ON: A pair of Triangle area singles players advanced to today's finals, but only Apex's team of Viking Edeback and Wesley Barrett advanced to the semifinals.
The Apex team knocked off Mitch Wasson and Seshank Arimilli of Northwest Guilford (6-1, 6-2) and Peter Tonon and Mickey Worthington of Charlotte Kell (6-2, 5-7, 6-2).
They face Greensboro Grimsley's Connor Cherwood and Jon Roy today at 9 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
In the singles, Green Hope's Jake Bowling defeated Mount Tabor's Patrick Cunningham and Matthews Weddington's Matt Oakes, both by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Chapel Hill's Andrew Malizia defeated Huntersville Hopewell's Anthony Lopez (6-1, 6-0) and Charlotte Myers Park's Merritt Trigg (6-1, 6-3).
Bowling plays Fayetteville Sanford's Ryan Noble, and Malizia faces Greensboro Page's Landon Kinsey at 9 a.m. in the semifinals.
In the quarterfinals, East Chapel Hill's Tim Bayus was eliminated, falling to Noble 6-1, 6-0.
GIBBONS GOES ON: A trio of area tennis players advanced to today's 2-A semifinals at Cary Tennis Center.
Cardinal Gibbons' Michael Reilly defeated Newton-Conover's Won Lak Choi (6-3, 7-6 (1)) in the first round and Shelby's Ryan Poage (6-0, 6-1) in the quarterfinals.
Gibbons' Will Rollinson won by default in the first round and then beat East Duplin's Nolan Outlaw (6-2, 6-0) in the quarterfinals.
Carrboro's Amir Najmabadi eliminated Newton-Conover's Josh Gill (6-0, 6-3) in the first round and South Columbus' Lucas Ford (6-4, 6-4) in the quarterfinals.
At 9 a.m., Reilly will face Graham's Tyler Cook and Najmabadi will square off against Rollinson.
Gibbons also advanced a pair of doubles teams to this morning's semifinals.
Gibbons' team of Chris Geaslen and Chris Betz beat Newton-Conover's duo of Alan Pernell and Will Huggins (6-2, 6-2) in the first round and then North Wilkes' Nathan Poteat and Cody Poplin 6-2, 6-0.
They'll face William Gray and Taylor Sullivan of Kill Devil Hills First Flight at 9 a.m. today.
Gibbons' other doubles team of Ryan Daly and Jonathan Fedorkowicz handled Newton-Conover's team of Hang Choi and Alex Burchins (6-1, 6-0) in the first round, and Ian Cook and Tommy Taylor of First Flight (6-1, 6-0).
They will face Ethan Caudell and Bradley Walters of Saint Pauls at 9 a.m.
Also in the first round, Pittsboro Northwood's Kory Adams and Matt Delafield defeated Ledford's Landon Rogers and Scott Buchanan, only to fall in the quarterfinals.
1-A TENNIS: Cole Caplan and Keith Funkhouser, both of N.C. School of Science and Math, were eliminated in Friday's finals at the Cary Tennis Center.
Funkhouser defeated Zach High of Polk 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals but fell to West Montgomery's Grant Harrison 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
South Stokes' Caleb Shelton defeated Caplan 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
