APEX - After building a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter, Apex held off a charging Broughton team to win a game that was delayed an hour by lightning.

Leading 8-7 just before the delay, the Cougars came out clawing when play resumed, scoring 13 straight points to take a 21-7 lead at the half.

Apex scored on a brilliant 33-yard strike from quarterback Houston Hawley to Brandon Carr and a 20-yard TD after a lateral from Hawley to running back Kevin Fogg, who then threw to a streaking Rob Fronk for the score.

Apex made it 20 straight points when a 60-yard kickoff return by Fogg put the team at the Broughton 41. After a dazzling, 38-yard scamper by Fogg down the middle to the 3-yard line, Hawley dove in for what appeared to be a commanding lead.

But the Capitals' defense didn't wilt in the pea-soup humidity.
