North Carolina swimmer Allison Barnes was released from the hospital on Wednesday -- roughly a month after suffering what her doctor termed "an apparent severe hyperthermic episode" during swim practice.
"Allison's rehabilitation will take some time but we're optimistic concerning the overall recovery," Keith Barnes, Allison's father, said in a prepared statement released by the school Friday. "We would like to thank all those who have supported us over this ordeal with special thanks going to the doctors and nurses at the hospital and the constant support of the UNC athletic department and UNC swim coach Rich DeSelm."
Barnes, a sophomore from Bel Air, Md., was pulled from the water on Sept. 9 by coaches, who then called 911. The team was practicing at the Chapel Hill Country Club because of maintenance at its usual pool. Barnes competes in the distance freestyle.
Hyperthermia is a condition that occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than it can dissipate, causing the body temperature to climb uncontrollably. It is sometimes referred to as heatstroke or sunstroke in its advanced stages.

CLEMSON BENCHES HARPER: From preseason player of the year to a seat on the bench, Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper has had a miserable fall.
Tigers football coach Tommy Bowden said Friday he'd start freshman backup Willy Korn against Georgia Tech on Oct. 18, seeking to spark what was supposed to be among the country's best offenses.
In control of it all was Harper, a steady senior who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing efficiency a year ago and set nearly two dozen school marks in his first season as a starter.
And that made him the clear-cut choice this summer for the league's top award.
However, the Tigers (3-3, 1-2 ACC) and Harper have not come close to last season's record-setting attack.
The final straw for Bowden was Thursday night's 12-7 loss at Wake Forest. Clemson managed only 198 yards, and Harper threw his sixth interception -- matching his total from 2007 -- deep in Tigers territory that helped the Demon Deacons rally from 7-3 down.
FRIDAY'S RESULTSWOMEN'S SOCCERECU 1, TULSA 0 (OT): Blair Heffner struck with just four seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the host Pirates (9-3-1, 4-0-1 Conference USA) the win over the Golden Hurricane (6-6-2, 1-3-1).
WOMEN'S GOLFNCSU'S DOUGHTIE, UNC'S CRANE SHARE LEAD: Senior Lauren Doughtie tied a program record with a 4-under-par 68 to lead N.C. State into third place after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at Fox Run Golf Course in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Wolfpack shot a season-best team score of 2-over (290) and trails only host Tennessee (283) and North Carolina (289).
Doughtie tied Briana Vega, former teammate Stephanie Derrey and current teammate Julie Saleeby for the lowest 18-hole score by a Wolfpack golfer.
She is also tied with UNC's Sydney Crane and Central Florida's Marika Lendl for the top spot.
VOLLEYBALLJOHNSON C. SMITH 3, SHAW 0: The host Bears lost to the Golden Bulls 25-14, 25-21 and 25-18.
HOUSTON 3, ECU 0: The host Pirates (11-10, 1-5 Conference USA) could not complete a comeback, falling (25-18, 25-19, 25-21).
