Wake County authorities recovered the body of a man who apparently drowned in Falls Lake Saturday evening.

The victim was identified as Aminad Perez, 23, of 571-A Dacian Road in Raleigh.

Phyllis Stephens, a spokeswoman with the Wake County sheriff's office, said Perez was on a family outing near the Barton Creek boat ramp Saturday afternoon when he walked around the cove to get water.

Instead of returning the way he came, Perez reportedly thought it would be faster to swim back.

He got about halfway across before going under, Stephens said. Police were called to the scene at 4 p.m. The recovery effort was delayed by heavy thunderstorms Saturday evening, but rescuers eventually located Perez between 7:40 and 8 p.m., Stephens said.

Perez's body was taken to Chapel Hill, where the state medical examiner will determine a cause of death.
