WINSTON-SALEM - A man who has spent 20 years in a state psychiatric hospital for killing four people and wounding five others during a 1988 shooting spree will forgo his annual release hearing.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported Saturday that Michael Hayes' decision to remain at Dorothea Dix Hospital for another year came three days before he was set to ask a judge for release. Hayes has the right to make the request yearly.

His attorney, Karl Knudsen, said Friday that Hayes signed a court order waiving the hearing.

Knudsen said his client didn't want to cause the victims or their families any more pain during the 20-year milestone.

Hayes, 44, has been at Dorothea Dix in Raleigh since a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity in 1989.
