The right motivation

My preacher's summary of a recent sermon made me wish that all of our leaders and representatives running in this election could have heard and taken his message to heart. Unfortunately, a few of our representatives (both parties in the not-too-distant past, even in North Carolina) have made mistakes based on self-interest and/or political motivation, the discovery of which has led to reforms, improvements and awareness.

Our preacher summarized his sermon in the following points:

* What will I do today because it is popular?

* Because it is what others want?

* What will I do because it will get me what I want?

* And what will I do because it is what God wants?"

I can't help but think that all of our representatives and political leaders could benefit from holding those points close to their thoughts as they move our state forward.

Not too far removed, Theodore Roosevelt once said: "In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing."

Let's hope we elect leaders/representatives who will represent us to the best of their abilities and make decisions based on doing the right thing.
