Rams tackle hopes to be injury free

Two injury-plagued years haven't hurt Orlando Pace's sense of humor.

The Rams' former Pro Bowl tackle said on Saturday during the second day of St. Louis' minicamp that he is feeling good and looking forward to training camp.

"I'm just getting ready for training camp," said a smiling Pace, who missed three camps earlier in his career when he was designated as a franchise player. "I'm not going to complain about missing some of training camp, but we'll see what the doctors say."

Pace tore a labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder on a routine block in the 2007 season opener against Carolina. He missed the rest of the season. That injury came after he tore his left triceps in Week 10 at Seattle in the 2006 season and went on injured reserve.

Coach Scott Linehan, in his third year and coming off a 3-13 season, said the goal is to limit Pace's repetitions in the minicamp and not overextend him.

"Orlando is not going to take much at all until we get back into training camp," Linehan said. "He will do all of the walkthroughs and the individuals. He will be cleared and good to go for training camp. We can't put him in that position yet."

The seven-time Pro Bowl player was the first overall pick of the 1997 draft. He will be 33 in November.

Pace is looking forward to putting his injuries behind him and regaining his Pro Bowl form.

"Wow, last year was a rough year," said Pace, whose string of seven consecutive Pro Bowls ended after the 2005 season. "When you've been injured the past year and a half or so, there's a different desire or hunger or purpose for playing."

RYAN'S NUMBER ON THE RISE: There were signs Saturday that No. 7 jerseys may become yesterday's fashion for Atlanta Falcons fans. Some fans attending the Falcons' opening day of minicamp wore No. 2 jerseys in early tribute to the team's new hope at quarterback, rookie Matt Ryan.

Vick still has fans in Atlanta, but Ryan's No. 2 is the new attraction at the merchandise tent.

"It's pretty cool to see people wearing your jersey, I'm not going to lie to you," Ryan said. "It's nice. I appreciate their support. Hopefully, I can play well and get more 2 jerseys in the stands."

MANNINGHAM, WOODSON HURT: Receiver Mario Manningham and quarterback Andre' Woodson were sidelined by injuries Saturday during the New York Giants' minicamp for rookies and free agents.

Manningham suffered a hip flexor on his left side running a pull-up pattern early in the morning workout. Woodson pulled a quad muscle in his left leg a short time later. The injury happened as the sixth-round draft pick from Kentucky was scrambling to his left during an 11-on-11 drill.

RAVENS BRAWL AT MINICAMP: A squabble began Saturday when Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Oniel Cousins and defensive tackle Amon Gordon threw punches after running back Allen Patrick was taken down hard on a burst up the middle. Nearly all 85 players in the Ravens minicamp surged toward the middle of the field after the incident, and it was nearly two minutes before peace was restored.

Later during practice, which was held indoors because of rain, defensive backs Corey Ivy and Frank Walker came to blows during a blocking drill.
